Oral Health Essentials: Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

Posted .

If you are unaware of what baby bottle tooth decay is, it is an oral health condition in children caused by the breakdown of their teeth, often caused by sugary sweets found in baby bottles. Fortunately, with effective oral health care, you can protect your child’s smile from the risk of baby bottle tooth decay.

Always make sure to never allow your child to sleep with a baby bottle in their mouth. Doing so will lead to baby bottle tooth decay, as it is possible for liquid to pool in their mouth. Furthermore, sugar is one of the most harmful ingredients to a child’s teeth, so limit or avoid drinks such as sports drinks, sugar water, sodas, and juice.

By the time a child is six months of age, their first tooth should break above the gum line. When it does, it must be cared for daily. A child cannot brush his or her own teeth, so it is up to you. When using toothpaste, use a blob roughly the size of a grain of rice. While cleaning their teeth is essential to their oral health care, so too should the effort be that is given to which products they consume.
