Root Canal Therapy: What You Should Know

Posted .

Is there a particular dental treatment you’re interested in avoiding? If so, what is it? If you thought of root canal therapy, you’re not alone–but did you know that there are several misconceptions about this treatment?

For instance, have you been told that root canal therapy is a painful treatment? If so, we have good news: most patients who have had tooth decay filled and have had root canal therapy say the two are fairly comparable. You might have also heard that removing the injured tooth is a better choice than getting root canal therapy. However, most dentists recommend saving the natural tooth whenever possible.

Another common misconception is that your root canal is fine if you aren’t experiencing any pain or discomfort. Pain and discomfort often accompany a damaged root canal, but there are other symptoms you should be aware of. For instance, discolored and swollen gums might be an indicator of a damaged root canal. It’s also important to note that you might have a damaged root canal without experiencing any of these symptoms. We recommend setting up an appointment with us once every six months so we can identify issues you might not be able to spot yourself.
